About Us

I started blogging to get things off my mind and put it into words. I find that I feel better laying everything out. Many times after writing I see a clearer picture than before.
This blog is about my son's ups and downs as a hearing impaired child. He also has problems with anxiety and attention/focusing. These areas we haven't explored yet with his pediatrician. At this point we are trying to help him the best we can without medication. I think it's coming to a point where we have to do more. I've approached the school on giving him counseling but their feelings is that he is fine. Ironic that the only negative comments on his IEP evaluation state that he is a distraction to himself and others and that he loses focus constantly.
School does not excite him. It's not that he's not smart enough but he learns easier hand on. Sitting at a desk in a classroom, reading from a text book does not hold his attention. He struggles with reading and writing because of his speech and hearing. He is now having issues with Math because of the reading involved with word problems.
The hearing impaired teacher says that a lot of his social issues as far as focusing go pertain to when he was younger. She said he missed a lot of the milestones in socializing and etiquette because of his hearing.
However, put a stick in his hand, ice skates on his feet and put him in front of a goalie net and the boy ROCKS! He's totally focused there and gives above and beyond 150%. He is a team player and is respected by teammates and opponents alike. The sad thing is that the rink he's played at for the last 4 years is closing this month (June). We are now in the process of scouting other rinks. There are none closer than an hour away. However, we will make sacrifices to get him there because this is the light at the end of the tunnel. This is what makes him light up. He lives for hockey and we refuse to let it go by the way side.
I hope you'll enjoy following his journey. There is lots of triumphs and frustrations. Ups and downs. Negatives and positives. He keeps trekking onward and we support him all the way.
